Cataracts can drastically affect the way a person sees the world. And little did some of us know some signs and symptoms can allude to you having cataracts. There are also multiple types of cataracts.

Not only are we going to give you the information on all of the types of cataracts, but we are also going to provide you with the early signs of cataracts.

Types of Cataracts

There are 3 types of cataracts that are typically caused by issues relating to age. Over time a person can suffer from one or a combination of any of the cataract types.

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts

This type of cataract is categorized by the yellowing and hardening of the lens as time goes on. The term nuclear refers to the gradual clouding that takes place in the central portion of the eye lens.

This type of cataract causes the person affected to have difficulty focusing on objects, however, nearsighted vision may improve temporarily. The improved nearsightedness is not a permanent correction it will also worsen over time.

Nuclear cataracts will take a long time to worsen, and it is a gradual process.

Cortical Cataracts

The term cortical refers to the white patches that can begin to show on the outer edges of the eye lens. Changes within the contact lens will create fissures within the lens that start on the outer edge and move towards the center of the eye.

The fissures cause blurred vision, contrast, glare, and depth perception when light enters the eye lens. This type of cataract can affect people that suffer from diabetes.

Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts

This cataract starts as a small area on the backside of the eye lens. This cataract creates a glare around lights that is known as a halo. This type of cataract is commonly found in people that have diabetes, nearsightedness, pigmentosa, and more.

Early Signs of Cataracts: Cloudiness

Cataracts tend to start small, and then as time goes on, they increase in size. As cataracts grow in size, vision can begin to seem cloudy, blurry, or dim. At times someone that is affected by cataracts can suffer from “second light,” which is vision improvement.

This second light is temporary and will worsen over time.

Bright Light Glare

Being sensitive to light is a common symptom for people that suffer from cataracts. When a glaring light infiltrates the eye lens, it can cause pain within the eye.

Needing New Glasses

As cataracts get worse, you may notice that you’ll need to consistently get stronger glasses or contacts prescription. If your vision is changing at such a rapid pace, your doctor may prescribe a stronger glasses prescription, or they may suggest cataract surgery which is very beneficial.

Do You Have Cataracts?

If you think you are showing early signs of cataracts, you must schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Scheduling an appointment will give you time to sit down with your doctor and find a plan of attack for cataracts.
