The Tulsa Health Department said it’s expecting a spike in mosquitoes across Green Country over the next week.
Health officials said the heavy rain from the weekend of July 11 and 12 left a lot of pooling water in our area.
Over time, that kind of environment becomes a haven for adult mosquitoes and that’s why the department said they’re expecting more mosquitoes to pop up in the next week.
THD’s Scott Meador said we are coming into the peak time of year for West Nile Virus to be transmitted, so it’s important to take precautions to avoid a spike in communities.
“Dump and drain out any standing water that you have in your yard. We also encourage you to speak with your neighbors and ask them to do the same thing. When you go outside, treat yourself with an approved repellant,” Meador said.
The department said they’ve been monitoring mosquitoes in the area and so far, only one pool tested positive for West Nile and that happened back in May.
