Dewey and Inez Muirhead know what it takes to have a long and happy marriage.
Just last month the couple celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary.
The Muirheads met at a “pie supper” in Wetumka.
“Oh, I thought she was sweet. Man, I seen her and said, ‘I’ve got to have her,’” said 98-year-old Dewey.
“He’s always got a smile and is trying to be funny,” said 97-year-old Inez.
Inez’s father sold a cow to pay for her wedding dress. Right after the wedding, Dewey was shipped off to fight in World War II.
The MP ended up fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.
“It was bad, rough,” remembered Dewey.
“I didn’t know if he’d ever get back home,” said Inez.
After the war, Dewey worked as a driller in the oil fields.
The two have lived in Wewoka for the majority of their long lives.
“It takes both of you to make it go,” said Inez about marriage advice.
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the two haven’t had a chance to have a birthday or anniversary party.
“It’s been hard on them. They don’t understand why people haven’t been coming to see them,” said their daughter Marilyn Moody.
The Muirhead family is hoping to have a larger celebration around Labor Day to mark the 78th anniversary.
“We’ve had a lot of good times,” said Inez.
