As Americans are buying more guns than ever before, it’s not just existing gun owners. Tulsa gun shops said they’re seeing a lot of first-time buyers.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation said nearly five million people bought their first gun this year, leading to a nationwide surge in sales.
Jason Perryman, manager of 2A Shooting Center in Tulsa, said in his 26 years in the firearm industry, he has never sold to so many new buyers.
“People are just not sure what's going to happen, living in uncertain times,” Perryman said.
The NSSF said the FBI performed a record of 12.1 million background checks for gun sales from January to July 2020. They said that’s an increase of almost 72%. The NSSF also found that 40% of gun sales were to buyers who never previously owned a gun.
Perryman said it’s important for new gun buyers to get training so they can safely handle firearms.
