Oklahoma Students Prepare For Junior Livestock Show Despite Fair Cancelation

Oklahoma agricultural students are unloading animals and preparing for junior livestock shows out at the Tulsa fairgrounds. While the Tulsa State Fair may be canceled, the family favorite event will still open to the public Wednesday at Tulsa's Expo Square. Staff say they are taking extra cleaning measures and because they expect thousands of students from across the state participating in the various exhibitions. Normally, some of the events would be open to Ag students from across the country

TULSA, Okla. -

Despite this year's Tulsa State Fair being canceled, the Junior Livestock Shows are still happening. Thousands of agriculture students are making their way to Tulsa for the various events happening over the week.

“About your sophomore years that’s when colleges start looking at you to recruit you to come to their college," said Karson Osborn.

Osborn is a sophomore and like many ag students he has a lot riding on this week. He's at Tulsa's Expo Square with his dad who is a Fort Gibson ag teacher and understands the importance of the exhibitions happening this week.

“If this show wouldn’t have happened all the money and time the students would have had invested would have been lost. So, I think it would have been very detrimental to the youth of Oklahoma if this show would have not happened," said Joe Osborn.

Expo Square staff said they’re taking extra cleaning precautions and they’re excited to host all of the visitors and students.

“Livestock and all the competition with entering your quilts or your photography or best baked pie is how fairs started across the country. So, we’re getting back to our roots," said Amanda Blair.

Getting back to the roots of the fair and providing opportunities for Oklahoma's youth is the focus.

“It’s more than just us getting to show animals. It’s getting us connections in the world, it gives us life experience and there’s plenty of scholarship opportunities," said Karson Osborn.
