The Department of Agriculture visited the Rural Impact Food Pantry in Inola in Thursday.

The USDA has passed out more than 100 million food boxes across the country through its Farmers to Families program, and nearly 70,000 of those have been through the Rural Impact Food Pantry.

“It means the world, for some of these people it's the difference between medicine and food, or between a house payment and adequate food," said Arnetta Cotton, Program Facilitator for the Rural Impact Food Pantry.

Cotton said the people they have been able to reach is beyond what she could imagine.

"We serve predominantly the rural areas that are surrounding us, but our reach is just astronomical, Inola, Wagoner, Muskogee, Pryor, Arkansas," Cotton said.

The USDA has partnered with Go Fresh in filling the boxes with meat, dairy and produce. Bette Brand, deputy undersecretary for Rural Development for USDA, said it was incredible to see the program at work.

"Like this, and like so many other things, when rural America thrives, all America thrives, and when families are fed, families are happier and can be more productive," Brand said.

For Cotton, reaching the community and helping those in need is an honor.

"Well for us it feels like we are the hands, feet, eyes, arms of God,” Cotton said. “To be able to provide something that was provided to us, freely we have received it so freely so freely we give it.”

The next time food will be handed out is Wednesday, November 4 at the Rural Impact Food Pantry at 37260 S. 4210 Rd. in Inola at 8 a.m.
