A Tulsa nonprofit works hard to ensure kids in their neighborhood have the support they need to learn online.

At The Common Good in northwest Tulsa, joy is much more than a feeling. It is a way of life.

"We celebrate all aspects of being here," said Gretchen Guillette with The Common Good.

"It makes me happy to come here because I can meet new teachers and I can meet new friends," said 8-year-old Christina.

Employees at The Common Good said every one of the kids they are currently working with qualify for free and reduced lunch.

"When the kids hit the door here, they have often had some challenges or not had breakfast," Guillette.

The mission at The Common Good is simple: partner with families in the 74127 zip code and connect them with resources in education, career development, mental health, advocacy, housing and sports and arts programs.

"We view ourselves as partners- partners with families, partners with schools, partners with other nonprofits who want to come in our building and share their services with our community," Guillette said. "We are not a service, we are truly partners."

When COVID-19 hit, the nonprofit wanted to make sure working guardians could keep working and that their kids had a place to go where they could grab some food, have fun and get help with distance learning. The Common Good has partnered with schools and families and is doing all they can to help. They have counselors, certified teachers who are making their mission come to life every day.

“'Well, aren't you worn out?' Well, many times yes but I feel like I am doing something worthwhile," said Carol Gunkel.

"It makes me feel really happy that I have the opportunity to come here because some people don't," said 8-year-old Jack.
