Tulsa Health Department Shares New COVID-19 Data To Help Each City Make Decisions

The Tulsa Health Department said it's extra work for staff to gather and break down the data on cases and hospitalizations, but staff hope giving each community specific information will help leaders make the best decisions.

During the COVID-19 crisis, consistency is key.

That's what Dr. Bruce Dart with the Tulsa Health Department stressed at last week's meeting with leaders in cities around Tulsa County.

“We talked to several different communities, had great conversations,” said Dart. “It's just whether they're willing to take that next step. I think we've got great possibilities here in Tulsa County of some communities doing that."

Dart said it's hard to slow the spread of COVID-19 around the Tulsa metro with only Tulsa and Jenks having mask mandates.

Thursday, his department shared specific data with Tulsa, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Glenpool, Jenks, Owasso and Sand Springs.

"There's politics in every community, and that's just the way it is with this virus, and hopefully we can get around that or over that or past that," said Dart.

The data the Tulsa Health Department showed Tulsa County had almost 23,000 total cases and more than 1,700 total COVID-19 hospitalizations from March through October.

Here's a breakdown of hospitalized residents in Tulsa County in the same time frame:

Part of City of Tulsa: 1,111

Part of Broken Arrow: 244

Jenks: 63

Part of Bixby: 54

Part of Owasso: 49

Dart said the data shows the harsh reality and the need to work together.

"I think it's important to make sure that everyone knows what's happening in their communities so they can have the right conversations and hopefully the right solutions," said Dart.

Dart also said he hopes to continue sharing this data with surrounding communities eventually every two weeks.
