Friend Remembers 29-Year-Old Man Killed In Car Crash

Tulsa Police are investigating a fiery crash that happened early Sunday morning.  

TPD said it received several 911 calls and one witness described what happened as an "explosion." Police said the man who died is 29-year-old Johnathan Garcia. 

"There was a witness who heard the crash from their home. There's homes that back up right there. They went out and tried to help, but the fire was too much,” Sgt. Will Dalsing said.  

Agustin Luna said he knew Garcia since middle school and considered him to be a best friend. He said Garcia always made people laugh and loved spending time with his two kids.  

TPD said just after midnight Sunday morning, Garcia was driving his Camaro on the wrong side of the road while speeding on 101st between Sheridan and Yale. Police said he hit several trees, then spun out and ended up on the other side of the road, where the car burned. 

Sgt. Dalsing said in more than 20 years of policing, he has heard of very few cars that "explode," and said what happened in this crash is unusual.  

"We think the force was so much, the tree did not give in any way, the force was so much that it actually ruptured the gas tank in this situation. And then the sparks from the crash would have ignited the gasoline,” Dalsing said.  

Tulsa Police are looking into whether the driver was involved in a hit and run, down the road at 101st and Mingo before he died. Bixby Police are investigating that crash.
