Being a coach is no easy task, always looking for your next win while trying to motivate your team. ORU Head Men's Basketball Coach Paul Mills has been doing more than coaching this season.
Another day in the practice gym for Coach Mills and ORU basketball, but this season's workouts aren't the only thing on Mills' mind.
He also is finishing his master’s degree at Dallas seminary. His professor was former Heisman finalist and Houston Cougar David Klingler.
"He’s been a godsend for me during this pandemic,” Mills said.
Their relationship is more than just student and teacher. The pair exchanges text messages often outside of class, and Mills has put the lessons he's learned from Klingler to action in his coaching.
"You got to have perseverance, you have to endurance, you are going to encounter adversity and you have to have teamwork,” Klingler said.
"If you are willing to quit now, would you one day be willing to quit on your marriage would you be willing to quit on your children?” Mills said. “I think those kinds of concepts that carry over in these lessons that people take away."
Though the two might not have known each other before Mills enrolled in Klingler's class, the former Cougar said he is now a Golden Eagles fan for life.
"He is going to have a successful program just because of the character of the man he is, so I'm looking forward to watching,” Klingler said.
