It’s not every day that you can learn from a professional baseball player if you are a high school team.
Victory Christian is learning from one of best and also developing a strong bond along the way.
It’s the end of January and Victory Christian is already hard at work out on the diamond.
This season the Conquerors have a little bit more expertise. Former ORU catcher and current prospect in the Rangers organization Matt Whatley is serving as a volunteer assistant.
"He has been a huge asset coming where he’s at, he is still young enough to relate to the guys, brings a wealth of knowledge with him,” head coach Austin Jarvis said.
That knowledge has trickled down to sophomore catcher Aidan O'Malley.
“Everything he teaches me I take into the game. It’s really fun to have him around and take as much as I can in from him because he has been drafted and he has played D1,” O’Malley said.
“He picks my brain and talk as much baseball as I can with him, and just try and be a sounding board and an ear,” Whatley said.
The bond that O'Malley and Whatley share runs deep. It’s more than a coach and player combination. Only time will tell how O'Malley will be able to play game of the baseball learning from Whatley.
"I'm trying to teach the things I didn't know and hopefully it’s going to make him a great ball player,” Whatley said.
