Paramedics and doctors said an alarming number of people are being treated at area hospitals for injuries from falling on icy sidewalks and driveways.

Doctors said they're seeing more young people between the ages of 20 to 40 years old that are ending up in the hospital with broken bones and even brain injuries.

“It’s really important if people do go outside for any reason what so ever--getting the mail, grabbing the paper, getting something from their car--that they are dressed for the weather. They’re not dressed for the duration of what they think the little errand will be,” said Adam Paluka.

Adam Paluka with EMSA said they're seeing a spike in calls related to people falling on ice. He said most of those people end up in the hospital.

“We’re really seeing all kinds of fractures. Whether you tried to fall on an outstretched arm trying to brace your fall you could fracture your wrist or elbow. If you’ve fallen on your side might have a shoulder fracture," said Jeff Johnson.

Jeff Johnson is a Hillcrest Emergency Physician and said they’re treating broken bones and brain bleeds from people falling on ice. He said they’re also treating some people with frostbite and hypothermia.

Another concern doctors have is seeing young kids getting injured.

“They’re not adjusting their speed or adjusting what they’re doing, like running and playing, in spite of the ice out there; so, they’re definitely having a few injuries coming from kiddos too," said Chris Abshere.

Chris Abshere is an ER doctor for the Warren Clinic and said most of these injuries happen right outside people's front doors.

“I would say maybe 60 to 70 percent of the fall calls that are weather related are happening within 50 feet of someone’s home. So, people are having a false sense of security when they’re by their house--they’re just saying I’ll just run out real quick," said Paluka.
