Tulsa International Airport Preparing for Cancellations and Delays Ahead Of Winter Storm

Officials from the Tulsa International Airport said it has crews on standby, ready to pre-treat the runways around 10 p.m. Saturday night for the snow arriving overnight.

Andrew Pierini with Tulsa International Airport told News On 6 Southwest has canceled all flights coming in and out of Tulsa on Feb 14.

Southwest and other airlines have also canceled some flights for the evening of Feb. 13.

Pierini said staff's priority is making sure the runways and taxiways are safe for all air carriers, so that is going to be the biggest challenge.

Pierini said during the pandemic, the airport averages a total of 30 to 35 departures and arrivals and that it is up to each airline whether to delay or cancel their flights.

Meanwhile, airport crews are staying at the TIA hotel so they can work anytime they're needed while rotating on 10-hour shifts.

Crews will also treat and monitor parking lots and areas where passengers may be dropped off and picked up, according to Pierini.

"Outside of snow, the ice storms over the years have always kind of caused trouble for the airport and airlines but we haven't seen anything with this kind of snow accumulation definitely within the last five to 10 years," said Pierini.

Pierini advised travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and give themselves plenty of time since the roadways and walkways will likely be slick.
