A deer that became stranded on an icy river is safe after an Oklahoma game warden bravely rescued the animal.
The Oklahoma Game Wardens Facebook page said someone saw a doe stuck on the frozen Arkansas River near Ponca City Monday and called game warden Spencer Grace.
Cell phone video captured the rescue. It showed Grace, tethered to a rope and wearing a lifejacket and waders, carefully making his way across the ice to the young doe.
Once he got to her, Grace tied a rope around the and slowly pulled her to the bank.
On land, her legs were shaking and it took her some time to get back on her hooves. When she eventually gained the strength to stand, she ran to some thick cover and it appeared she would be just fine.
Grace is familiar with that area and knew the river there was not deep there, making his rescue technique possible.
New On 6 wants to stress, anyone who sees an animal stranded on the ice should not attempt to save it. Instead, call a professional, like a game warden or animal control, to come and help.
