A Sand Springs woman is using her hobby of sewing to bring peace and comfort to those who have lost loved ones.

Kelle Roberts said she started making Memory Pillows after losing her dad in the fall, and she's continued to make them for others experiencing grief.

Roberts said she believes making these pillows is a calling from God, and it's been rewarding to use something so painful to touch the lives of others in a positive way.

"I really feel my dad smiling down on me, I think he would be very, very proud," Roberts said.

Roberts lost her dad in November to COVID-19. She said she wanted to do something special for her family for Christmas, so she grabbed some of his old clothes, and stitched them into pillows.

"Something that they can hold in their hands, something that they can hug, when they want a hug from that person and they're not there," Roberts said.

Roberts shared pictures of the pillows on Facebook, and from there the interest took off. She's now getting messages from others who have lost loved ones who want to buy one of their own.

"The stories that I hear when people message me and want to order a pillow are just heartbreaking," she said.

Roberts said she makes each pillow as if it were for her own family, and the response has been overwhelming.

"I would come in my sewing room and I would turn on praise and worship, and I would just sew and I'd stop and I'd cry and I'd dry myself up and start sewing again," Roberts said.

She said it's been a hard time for her family but making these pillows and being able to bring joy to others has been helpful as she deals with her own grief.

"I feel like this is what God is calling me to do and I don’t want to turn my back on him. If I can bring them some kind of joy, some kind of comfort, some kind of peace, then I'll continue to do it," Roberts said.
