Tulsa fire marshals are investigating the cause of a house fire that killed two people.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the garage and spread throughout the rest of the house.
“So, that fire may have built significantly before they even knew it was there. Once it moved it’s way through that door and into the home, it would just start barreling in; so, it’s certainly very sad for this family," said Andy Little with Tulsa Fire Department.
Neighbors said three people live in the home. One of them was not home when the fire started, but got home, as firefighters were putting water on the fire.
“[That person] gave firefighters some information about where some of the residents might be in the home. Which actually helped our search team," said Little.
Little said they are not releasing the names of the two victims, but firefighters found a woman lying in the hallway and another person in a bedroom.
“If you’re asleep when something like this happens, often times you may wake up and if you sit up and take a big breath of that toxic smoke in it incapacitates you," said Little.
He said firefighters quickly got both of the people out of the house, but the thick and toxic smoke from plastics and synthetic material, had already gotten into their lungs.
“Firefighters used cyano kits which greatly increases the odds of survival after breathing in those toxic fumes. But there was just so much smoke and so much bad stuff in the atmosphere that they just weren’t able to revive them," said Little.
Little said they aren't sure yet if there were smoke alarms in the house.
