Glenpool's NorthStar Church donated bags of food to struggling senior citizens and families Wednesday morning.
The church partnered with Feed the Children to make the delivery in Mounds possible.
The church delivered truckloads of food, water, and essential items to help Oklahomans who have been hit hardest by the pandemic.
Many of the families came from Sapulpa to pick up food, where the U.S. Census Bureau said in 2019, 16 percent residents were living below the poverty line.
NorthStar pastor Rod Baker said even more people across the area have gone hungry, and the numbers show it.
"Rural Oklahoma is struggling," Baker said. "One out of every six seniors has no food whatsoever. One out of every four children, you know struggle."
Chandra Case, one of the volunteers, said during a time like COVID-19, it feels even better to help out the community.
"Now more than ever, people need hope, and they need to know that people care about them and love them, especially with everything going on," Case said.
Case said she is just one of several volunteers who took time to lend a hand to these families. She said, as a native Tulsan, she is proud of the way Oklahomans step up to help our communities.
"So, when you can come back and see like the good that's being done, or the word that's still being spread, you know the light, it's just really special," Case said.
Case said the church tries to help the community at least once a month since the pandemic started. Baker said the most important thing they could give to these families isn't food, it's hope.
"Without faith, people perish. For us, we're people of faith so we believe the greatest gift has been given to us," Baker said. "So, we're going to give to others."
