Several law enforcement agencies are investigating after discovering a man dead in a creek Friday in Craig County.
Investigators believe the man who was discovered in Pawpaw Creek could be connected to a chase that happened Saturday night on I-44.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol got into a short chase in Vinita before they said the man crashed and ran away.
Craig County Sheriff Heath Winfrey said they could not find him but were later called to an area several miles from that location where someone had seen a suspicious person on their property. Winfrey said they tried to arrest the man, but instead he got into the water where he was later found dead.
"It's just a terrible situation. It's obviously not what we set out to do, we don't want to be involved in ever, but this is one of those deals that it's just an unfortunate event,” said Sheriff Winfrey.
This is an ongoing investigation. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the Vinita Police Department, OHP, and the Craig County Sheriff's Department are working together.
The person involved in the chase and believed to have later died has not been identified. News On 6 will continue to keep you updated as we learn more information.
