Fireworks will cost you more this year - if you can find them.
Several firework businesses across Green Country said it’s a supply and demand issue caused by the pandemic, as factories in China are struggling to meet the high demand of fireworks this year.
Wednesday was the very first shipment at Big Blast Fireworks and according to managing partner Melissa Torkleson, it was the most expensive container she’s ever received, as shipping costs have doubled compared to previous years.
“When we received our invoice in March, it jumped up to $22,000,” Torkleson said.
Torkleson said her prices will increase anywhere from 10 to 20 percent for larger items. She said she’ll try to keep prices down for smaller items.
“I’m being told right now the containers coming out of China are hovering over $25,000- $30,000, so ours shipped out in March and of course we were not expecting that increase,” Torkleson said.
Torkleson said people can expect to see lot of empty shelves at businesses leading up to July.
“Disappointing in a lot of ways because there are somethings that are popular is going to be a little bit of a shortage,” the owner of Kent Fireworks, James Kent said.
Kent’s business is also experiencing shortages. Like every year, Kent will soon open us his firework stand off South 49th West Avenue. He said the shortages will also end up increasing his prices.
Despite the shortage, Torkleson believes people will still have fun during their Fourth of July celebrations.
“People are ready to put COVID and the pandemic behind,” Torkleson said.
If you plan to purchase fireworks for the Fourth of July, Torkleson said it’s best to buy them as early as possible.
