Ahead of the holiday weekend, law enforcement statewide will be looking for distracted drivers, drunk drivers and those not wearing a seatbelt. It's one of the busiest travel weekends of the year and troopers expect a lot of people to be on the roads.

Troopers said something as simple as putting on your seatbelt gives you a 50 percent better chance of surviving a bad crash.

Creek County Chief Deputy Fred Clark said their deputies will be working extra shifts through the next several days to make sure people are wearing seatbelts and being safe.

"We'll have extra deputies and high visibility to slow down drivers," Clark said.

The Click it or Ticket campaign includes 57 law enforcement agencies this year and they'll be on patrol until June 6. This weekend is a holiday weekend, and thousands are set to be around the Tulsa area with Greenwood events and a presidential visit, which means buckle up.

"We can see when someone isn't wearing a seatbelt or if a child is unrestrained," said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Chris Liles.

Liles said in 2019, 208 people who weren't wearing seatbelts died on Oklahoma highways and he said buckling up could increase your chances of surviving a crash by 50 percent.

"Our goal is to make it safe for everyone," Liles said.

Other agencies like Owasso Police said they'll be adding checkpoints early next week and ramping up patrol.

"In my career, I've seen seatbelts save many lives. where someone not wearing it would have not survived the accident," said Clark.

Oklahoma law says drivers and front seat passengers are required to wear seatbelts and every child under eight must be secured in a car seat.
