Green Country Businesses, Law Enforcement Prepare For Memorial Day Weekend

The unofficial start of summer is nearly here, so both businesses and law enforcement are preparing for a busy Memorial Day weekend.

Paradise Cove Marina at Lake Fort Gibson said with how this pandemic has affected us all, they know a lot of folks are ready to get out this Memorial Day weekend.

“People escape from the city by coming out on their boats,” Paradise Cove Marina Sales Representative Ann Davis said.

Davis said they expect a lot of boaters and campers this weekend.

“It’s a family lake, so there’s not a lot of partying, people just have a good time with their families,” Davis said.

Robert Mickel and his family came to enjoy the lake this Memorial Day weekend.

“Cases are down, and they are just getting away from everything,” Mickel said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is also preparing for a busy weekend, as AAA expects there is going to be a 60% increase in traffic on the roads compared to last year.

“That equites to about 23 million more travelers,” Trooper Mark Southall said.

Southhall said they will be watching for drunk drivers, but he said it’s not just the highways that folks need to be careful on.

“People don’t realize that you can receive a DUI on a boat,” Trooper Southall said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said you can dial star 55 if you need assistance on the highways, and they’ll be there to help as soon as possible.
