High school football is just one week away, and Union is primed for a deep run at the playoffs.
With more than 30 seniors gunning for a gold ball, senior linebacker Gabe Ford said he and his teammates will stop at nothing to win a championship.
"It’s play up, we are trying to go up another level. Our stadium has obviously gone up another level, so we have asked our kids to play up in everything they do," said Union Head Coach Kirk Fridrich.
Not a bad motto to have heading into the season. For Union senior linebacker Gabe Ford that statement is his badge of courage, after being named a senior captain this season.
"My mom was super proud when I told her that I was team captain, you could tell it meant a lot to her. I’m just honored to lead these people," said Ford.
Being named the team captain is everything for Ford. He is the first person in his family that has ever played an athletic sport and excelled at the game of football.
"The way he has conducted himself the last few years and being a three-year starter for us and there’s no question he is a guy that puts in the work,” Fridrich said. “Everyone on the team knows it, including his peers, he’s a great guy for everyone to look up to.”
They say the quiet ones are the ones you have to watch out for. And Ford’s voice is best heard leading his defense into battle.
