Tulsa Public Schools announced that it will be updating its mask expectations for students and staff members over the next two weeks.
Despite the state law that prevents requiring masks, TPS said students and staff will wear masks while inside its buildings.
In a message to parents, TPS Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist said that due to the current surge of COVID-19 cases in the city and after the completion of the first week of school it was determined that they could improve the current safety protocols.
"Effective Monday, August 30: All staff will wear masks while inside our buildings. The only exception will be for individuals who have a documented and approved medical exemption.
Effective Tuesday, September 7: All students will wear masks while inside our buildings. The only exceptions are for students who have a documented and approved medical exemption or a district-approved exemption based on the educational or the social and emotional needs of the student. During the next week, we will be sharing details with our school communities regarding the specific expectations and possible exemptions regarding mask-wearing."
Dr. Gist says the school will continue to work with the Tulsa Health Department to keep students and staff safe and in school.
