Bishop Kelley students wrote thousands of letters to Santa to help raise money for Make-A-Wish Oklahoma. Thursday, they dropped off boxes of letters at Macy's for national "Believe Week."
For every letter they mailed, Macy's donated $2 but the happiness that comes from the letters is priceless. "I think it really hits you what an impact you're making because I've been on the receiving end of it and it means so much just the hope it gives a child," said Ellie Rocco.
Bishop Kelley students delivered 30,000 letters to Macy's last year, which put them in second place in the country. This year's numbers were off the charts. "They had a goal. They were going to beat number one and they did. Number one last year was almost 50,000. So they almost doubled it to 88,000 letters. That's amazing," said Beverly Mullen.
Beverly Mullen with Make-A-Wish Oklahoma said the money raised in the month of December helps grant wishes for kids in Oklahoma. "The average cost for a wish, cash cost of a wish in Oklahoma is about five thousand dollars," said Mullen.
Five thousand dollars to grant a wish for people like Ellie Rocco. She's a junior at Bishop Kelley and her wish was granted earlier this year. She knows personally the impact the letters have on people in our community. "You never really give to yourself and that was what I was doing and seeing my friends do that was really odd, but really rewarding experience," said Rocco.
