Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Casey Thompson entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last month following his first season as the program’s starter. The move was not exactly unexpected once Texas gained the commitment of former Ohio State five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Thompson has been busy visiting schools in recent weeks, and reportedly has a list of top schools he is considering. Thompson, who dropped by Nebraska Wednesday, has focused his attention on Nebraska, Oklahoma, Auburn, Indiana and Missouri, according to Mitch Sherman of The Athletic.

Sherman cited Thompson’s father, former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson, for the update.

Casey Thompson entered the portal as a graduate transfer after starting the bulk of Texas’ games under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. He threw for 2,113 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his 12 games last season.

Shortly after entering the portal, Thompson penned a letter to Texas fans.

“Thank you for everything,” Thompson wrote. “We've been through a lot. These past few years have been an amazing journey, the ups, the downs, everything - I'm thankful for it all. I'm thankful for all the relationships. The experiences and lessons I've learned will help me in life. They shaped me to become the man I am today and I wouldn't have grown without adversity. From different coaching staffs, to uncertainty, waiting for an opportunity, to competing. It’s been a lot, but it’s all a part of a greater plan. Thank you to the QBs I got to compete with and build relationships with: Sam, Shane, Cam, Hud, JJ, Ben, Charles, Cole. It’s all love!”

Charles Robinson spoke to Horns247 about his son’s decision to transfer last month.

"We're confident Casey will end up at a place that appreciates his talents, leadership and work ethic," Charles told Horns247's Chip Brown. Charles added that Casey "has some strong Power Five options," according to Brown.

Thompson led the Big 12 in touchdown passes in 2021 and had 55 carries for 157 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He completed 63.2% of his passes (165 of 261) and became the first quarterback in school history to throw for five touchdowns three times in a season (against Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Kansas). Thompson became the first quarterback in the Big 12 to throw for five touchdowns with a running touchdown in a game (against Kansas) since Kyler Murray in 2018.

But Texas landing Ewers put Thompson’s future as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns in jeopardy.

"Well, it's big. It was a different recruitment obviously for Quinn," Sarkisian said of Ewers on Longhorn Network's National Signing Day show. "I've recruited him at the past place I was at. Obviously, he had been committed here before. He reclassifies and goes early to Ohio State and it's just amazing how everything kind of comes full circle for him and for us. He's a heck of a player. He’s a heck of a talent. I think there's a big sigh of relief for him. I think this is where he kind of wanted to be. Now we start the process of the development of him in our system and with the players around him and see how far we can take it."
