Oklahoma has set a new record for COVID-19 cases.

The highly contagious virus is impacting schools, hospitals and thousands of families across the state.

Since Friday, more than 28,000 Oklahomans tested positive for COVID-19.

Health experts said what’s troubling is the number of positive cases is likely much higher.

The State Health Department reported:

  1. 9,320 new cases Saturday
  2. 9,608 cases Sunday
  3. 8,130 new cases on Monday

Experts say the actual number is much higher because of home tests, and some professional tests aren't included.

"There are more cases that are out there than what we are reporting in any given day. Some of those are identified through home testing. Some of those are individuals that maybe their case is so mild or maybe they are asymptomatic that they don't even seek out testing and then there are those that don't seek out testing anyway,” said Keith Reed, Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Oklahoma's hospitals are already feeling the strain.

Statewide there are 1,065 Oklahomans hospitalized with COVID, almost all of them unvaccinated according to the State Health Department.

Health officials urge people with symptoms or those who have been exposed to COVID-19 to seek out testing and isolate to slow the spread.
