Broken Arrow Public Schools will extend its distance learning plan through January 21, according to a message to families and staff.

According to BAPS officials, 710 employees are absent for illness and other various reasons which they say is an all-time high.

"In November, our average number for substitute teachers was 109. Yesterday, with only eight sites open, we needed 139 substitute teachers. Our fill rate was 29.5%, which left 98 classrooms unfilled. This causes our teachers to double and triple-cover classrooms throughout the day" said BAPS administrators.

Due to the high number of absences among the staff and student body, all Broken Arrow schools will continue distance learning through January 21.
