Police: $300 In Stolen Legos Led Them To Bomb

Broken Arrow Police say $300 worth of stolen Legos led them to find a bomb in a car during a traffic stop.

Osage SkyNews 6 flew over the scene Monday night where police blocked off 71st Street near the Creek Turnpike, for hours.

Police say 19-year-old Zane Bennett told officers he made the bomb in a hotel room the other day and said he was going to "blow things up with it, but didn't intend to hurt anyone."

Police say they found the explosive device in the backseat of a car after pulling over Bennett’s girlfriend, 20-year-old Mariah Davis.

Police say they were looking for her because she was accused of stealing $300 worth of Legos from a store earlier in the day.

"They grabbed her and backed her away and moved everybody to safety and shut down the roadway. We called OHP and the Tulsa bomb squad,” said Officer Chris Walker with Broken Arrow Police.

Police say that's when Davis' boyfriend, Bennett, showed up to get his car. Officers say he admitted to making the explosive device and told officers he had left it in the back of Davis' car.

"He's not a professional at this. From the descriptions in the reports, it could be a deadly device that could have caused serious injuries. You know, every traffic stop is different. There is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. You never know what you are going to walk up to,” said Walker.

Officer Chris Walker with Broken Arrow police says closing down nearby streets may have caused a traffic headache for many, but their only goal was keeping everyone safe.

"We have to do that for safety. If this thing had gone off or if it was assembled differently, it could have caused some serious issues and still could have caused serious issues,” said Walker.

Officers say they are thankful for all of the help from OHP, the Tulsa Police Bomb squad, and ATF. Bennett was arrested for manufacturing an explosive device and Davis was arrested for larceny.
