Miami High School Football Player Shares Experience After Deadly Shooting

Tulsa Police are still searching for the suspect in a deadly shooting at the McLain High School homecoming game Friday night. An argument outside of the stadium led to the shooting, TPD said.

17-year-old Terron Yarbrough was shot and killed, and three people were injured, including a 9-year-old girl, TPD said.

A Miami High School football player who ran for safety when the gunshots started, explained what it was like from his perspective.

Miami High School Senior Eric McKibben said after his team's win, players were lined up shaking hands when they heard three gunshots.

“And whenever the gunshots went off, I kinda like froze because right away I knew what it was,” McKibben said. “But at the same time it was like I just didn't expect it and there was like a million thoughts going through my head and then the guy I was shaking hands with, we were still like, had our hands together and he looks at me and he's like, 'Run!'"

He said students ran to Miami's sideline, hiding by the stands for several minutes before heading to the locker room.

Back in 2016, McLain's stadium was the scene of another crime. Tulsa Police arrested a juvenile after a shooting in the stands injured one person.

In the early 2000s, fights and shootings unfolded at athletic events.

“And so I guess you kind of figure, you know, you're going to a bad area, there's shootings and stuff, the players are probably gonna be a little nasty but then it wasn't like that at all,” McKibben said.

McKibben said McLain athletes were respectful and showed great sportsmanship.

"Throughout the whole thing, even though we were winning the whole time, the players were just really nice. They'll tackle you, they'll help you up. They'll tell you good job,” he said.

McKibben believes his superintendent handled the situation well, by deciding not to come to McLain for any activities in the future.

"I don't think we should play there again. And that's what I feel bad about. We don't have to play there again, but McLain has to keep playing there. That's their stadium. So those kids have to keep going there,” he said. "They want the same thing I want, which is just to play football."

TPS said classes are canceled again Tuesday, Oct. 4, at McLain.
