The City of Collinsville is looking for help from the public to get enough wreaths to honor more than 900 fallen veterans.
The city says it is struggling to get people to sponsor wreaths to be placed here at Ridgelawn Cemetery for Wreaths Across America Day. This year is the 4th year Collinsville will participate in the ceremony to honor the brave men and women who served our country.
When the city first started the initiative they had 725 veterans buried at the cemetery and now 4 years later they have more than 950. Wreaths Across America coordinator Sherry Campbell says the need for sponsors continues to grow and the city is hopeful they can continue making an impact during the holiday season with this work.
"It's only $15 to sponsor a wreath to put on a veteran's grave. $15 doesn't seem like a whole lot but in the end, if it's your veteran that doesn't have a wreath to put on a grave it's the world it means everything to have that wreath there during Christmas time," said Campbell
Collinsville will be part of about 2,500 other communities across the country honoring veterans for their service with Wreaths Across America. The special ceremony will be held on December 17th.
