A siamang born at the Tulsa Zoo in the summer is growing up with the help of his parents.
Pandai, the baby siamang at the Tulsa Zoo, is seven and a half months old. He was given his name earlier this year, which means clever in Malay.

Born on August 8, 2022, Pandai is playful, curious, and full of adventure. His parents are mom Boomerang and dad Jambi. He's Boomerang's first baby, and zookeeper Sarah Duncan says she's proving she has excellent mothering skills. In the wild, babies stay with their parents for six to eight years before venturing out on their own.
"He is starting to really get his independence. He's excited to explore. He's becoming more coordinated, so he climbs nonstop,” Duncan said.
Duncan says Pandai loves to climb, but if he gets too far away, Boomerang pulls him closer.
"She has held him close and watched out for him, and now, she's starting to give him that independence,” Duncan said.
Duncan says the siamangs take care of themselves, but zookeepers provide nutrition and things to do and explore. For example, for feeding, they must work for their food like they would in the wild. The animals are species of Gibbon and these siamangs stick together.
"They have very, very close family bonds. So, it's a lot of fun to watch them interact with each other,” Duncan said.
