Berryhill parents are relieved their kids are safe after a man with a gun nearby led to the district’s campuses going on lockdown.
The man shot at a car outside his home, then walked towards the high school, where he was arrested, Tulsa County deputies said.
Deputies arrested Daniel Lorta in a field behind Berryhill High School. The gun he used to shoot at the car with was also found in the field, deputies said.
Lorta was just arrested 10 days earlier on complaints of pointing a gun. After bonding out and getting in trouble, he now faces more charges, including shooting with intent to kill.
Deputies said on Monday afternoon, multiple calls were made to 911 about shots being fired. By the time they got to Lorta’s home, they believe he was already out of the house.
Lorta was spotted near the high school, which prompted all campuses to go on lockdown, investigators said.
The lockdown caused nervousness for parents who usually show up at the end of the day to pick their kids up, especially in light of the Nashville school shooting just hours earlier. Many of them waited anxiously until the all-clear was given.
“We just live a mile from school. Everything’s real close and convenient,” said Kerrie Fenimore, whose five grandkids were in school during the lockdown. “We hear something like that, we jump up here.”
Many parents waited at nearby locations like gas stations as they tried to figure out what was going on.
“There’s a rumor mill going around trying to figure out what’s going on,” said Kayla Admire, a parent of a kindergartner on lockdown. “It makes you nervous as a parent.”
About an hour after all the chaos, parents finally got word the lockdown was lifted and they could pick their kids up.
