Tulsa city leaders are encouraging people to clean their communities.
The Great Tulsa Clean-Up is a month-long effort In honor of Earth Month. The third annual event kicked off this weekend. Throughout April, groups of friends, co-workers, or organizations go around the city picking up trash. Janell Hartwell is the city's community involvement coordinator.
"Honestly, just having anyone come out and just see the impact it has can really encourage people to kind of make a difference, make a change in their own life,” Hartwell said.
Each team is provided with grabbers and trash bags to join the effort in cleaning the community. The teams also get safety vests, gloves, and a free t-shirt! Volunteers spend time picking up trash that’s blown out of garbage cans or been left behind by littering.
Hartwell says many locations are by creeks or bodies of water - since the trash tends to wind up in creeks and streams. That's why events like this make a difference.
"It's important because you can get involved. You can actually see firsthand how we might impact the environment around us,” Hartwell said.

There are four locations across the city to pick up supplies on your cleaning day. The Great Tulsa Clean-Up continues through the end of the month.
