A man wanted for rape is in jail after a standoff with officers near several schools. Officers said the incident prompted a brief lockdown on those campuses.
Dustin Newlin was arrested by Sapulpa Police for two warrants, including second degree rape in Creek County.
Captain Mike Sole said officers found Newlin in a car parked outside of a house near Mission Street and Lincoln Avenue. He said Newlin refused to come out.
"They talked to him, tried to negotiate for him to come outside peacefully," said Sole. "However, he would not do that."
Sole said officers broke the windows of the car and used pepper balls to try to get him out.
Police said he still did not come out, so a team of officers approached the car and pulled him out by force.
Sole said officers move with a lot of urgency since they thought Newlin could have had a gun with him.
The incident happened just across the street from the high school, which prompted a lockdown until officers got him into custody.
Records show Newlin is a convicted felon and has spent time in prison for stealing.
