Tulsa Parks is offering ways for seniors to stay fit with various exercise classes ranging from line dancing to basketball.
Tulsa Parks kicked off spring athletic classes for seniors last week. At Hicks Park Community Center, Wednesday morning started with low-impact aerobics. Luke McCollom is the Park Manager.
"Staying active is the main ingredient to being healthy. Once we get older, if we don't continue to stay active to maintain them, things can get injured and things like that. Basically, we're here to promote healthy living all of life,” McCollom said.
A wide of range activities are being offered from line dancing to cornhole tournaments. Both of those are in partnership with Oklahoma Senior Games, where people can later put their skills to the test in competitions. There's also pickleball- and senior women’s 3-on-3 basketball.
At 90 years old, Anne Deeter teaches the senior exercise class three days a week
"It's a full body, we do everything. We do aerobics for like 25 minutes, then we do weights, then we do floor weights and chair work,” Deeter said.
She says her favorite part is the community and seeing the benefits in people's lives who regularly attend class.
"Strengthening, their balance is better, they're stronger, just able to do a lot more,” Deeter said.
