The demolition of buildings at Comanche Park is about halfway complete, and is expected to take the rest of the year.
Construction on its replacement, part of the comprehensive 36th North concept, will begin in 2024.
The $190 million project, funded by both government and philanthropy, will include mixed rate apartments and retail on the original Comanche property and across the street.
The site of the community center being demolished Thursday drew tears for some of the former residents, who gathered to watch the progress.
“It's a new beginning for people I believe; a new start,” said Angelica Fletes.
“I'm excited about what they'll do when they rebuild it, but yeah, it was overdue” said Sidney McCalib.
THA said the project will double the amount of housing in the old complex, with more than 500 units.
