Damage to the power grid can be repaired relatively quickly. But damage to homes, businesses and schools will take much longer fix.
State School Superintendent Ryan Walters visited the campus of the Broken Arrow Freshman Academy to view damage from the weekend storm.
A press box at the stadium blew off, and the roof was damaged in several places on the building. Broken Arrow Superintendent Chuck Perry estimated the damage at $700,000.
The roof damage let rain pour into the gymnasium, but it was quickly dried up, and the floor should be fine, according to Perry.
Walters visited Broken Arrow after speaking by phone with Tulsa Superintendent Deborah Gist about the more widespread damage that’s impacting the district.
“Tulsa is pretty bad, still most of their district is without power,” said Walters. “They were onboarding teachers, that whole program had to be shut down because those sites don't have power as well.”
Walters offered help from the state to help districts, but didn't know yet how many districts have damage, or what kind of help the state could really provide, except to waive reporting requirements.
“Do we have any discretionary funds we can help out? Is it resources, getting resources to the district?” he said without providing any specifics.
