It's the start of the holiday season which means there's lots of traveling ahead. Pediatrician Dr. Theresa Horton joined News On 6 with how you can prepare your little ones for holiday travel.
You should wait at least until your baby is 7 days old before traveling. But during flu season, it's safer to wait until they're over 3 months. Try picking flights earlier in the day to avoid delays or other people traveling.
Ideally, they should have a seat of their own, and for infants, flying in their carrier is the safest. You can buy a harness if you get one that's approved by the FAA for toddlers that acts as a 5-point harness restraint.
During takeoff and landing is when you're going to see that the most, so having something to suck on helps. Whether you're breastfeeding or bottle, whether you have a pacifier, maybe a water bottle, or a straw that toddlers can drink from. And that action in and of itself usually helps to equalize the ears. And if your child has a cold, they might have more trouble with the pressure, so check with your doctor before flying when your children are sick.
If at all possible, keep them separate from the large crowds, especially with the little babies. Bring your own hand sanitizer, and your own wipes because you want to be able to wipe down any surfaces that your child might touch, especially on airplanes. They do sanitize the planes, but it's better to be extra careful. And, of course, washing hands frequently.
