Kids sometimes show up to school without having some basic necessities from home, like clothing or soap.
A teacher at a Broken Arrow elementary school created a place where kids can get the items they need.
Part of being successful in school is being prepared.
Kellie Miller wants every student at Lynn Wood Elementary to have what they need regardless of their lives at home.
"We have lots of kids on free and reduced lunch, so there is a higher poverty level," she said.
To help, she created a care closet.
"We never want anybody to go without those basic items for a living and sometimes there is a stigma attached to asking for help, so being a neighborhood school, all of our kids walk to school, we kind of serve as a safe place in the community," said Miller.
The closet is filled with socks, shoes, and other clothing items. If kids get dirty on the playground or there's an emergency at home, Miller and the other teachers are ready to help in a pinch.
The closet does not only provide clothing and school supplies; it also has free hygiene products like soap and deodorant.
"Working in an elementary school, there are always emergencies that pop up,” Miller said. “When a family comes to us in crisis, they have a lot on their plate. It’s one less thing they have to worry about. They can just get it here and be done. They know they can always ask for more; we have enough."
Miller is grateful for the organizations and people in their community who have donated.
She hopes people will continue to support the cause by keeping kids prepared for whatever they face at school.
