Spring has sprung in the Tulsa Botanic Garden, but that is not the only reason to pay the garden a visit.
A new exhibit, Sean Kenney's Nature POP!, is on display from Saturday, March 16th through Thursday, May 9th. Tulsa Botanic Garden just recently reopened after being closed for two months. Among the daffodils, hyacinth, and tulips are 40 sculptures made entirely of LEGO pieces.
Tulsa Botanic Garden CEO Chuck Lamson helped bring the exhibit to Oklahoma. "I read about it in a magazine, this artist Sean Kenney who does this, and I said this would really be cool for the garden," he said.
Kenney lives in New York City where gardens are few and far between. He said that has led him to think about the impact humans have on nature.
"Everything comes from the earth and everything that we do has a direct impact on the earth," said Kenney. That is the inspiration behind his sculptures that make up Nature POP!
He added, "Just as two LEGO pieces interconnect, and many pieces interconnect to form these complex sculptures, everything in nature is interconnected in a very complicated way."
The LEGOs do not distract from the garden's beauty but add to it. Lamson also believes the exhibit will draw in a broader audience.
"The idea is to have people explore, see the garden, and experience it," he continued saying, "Maybe they see something they really like that is cool like a plant or flowers."
Sean Kenney's Nature POP! is included in the price of admission. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for ages 3 to 15, and free for Garden members.
