For many high schoolers, prom night is something they look forward to all year long, but for some, getting all dressed up may feel out of reach.
Prom Wishes Inc. is a free closet full of dressed, shoes and more to help girls who can't afford those things be dressed from head to toe on prom night.
"Is there like a specific color you all are looking for or anything," volunteers asked girls as they came in and shopped for that special dress for their night to shine.
"That one's pretty," they said, but for some girls, prom is out of the budget. "I remember that feeling of I'm not going to prom because I don't have the money to get a dress or shoes," said Prom Wishes Inc. president Sarah Bridgeman.
That's why she made sure every high school she worked with got to have that experience, "to see a girl come in here and put on a dress and look in the mirror and just smile and feel happy about the way they look is amazing," Bridgeman said.
One of those girls was Skiatook high schooler Marisol Sanchez. "I'm trying to look for a burgundy red," she said as she flipped through the dresses.
She and Prom Wishes Inc. volunteer Michelle sorted through hundreds of hanging dresses looking for a showstopper.
"What about that one," Michelle asked Marisol.
But for Bridgeman, she wanted the girls to know it wasn't just about what they wear, it was about how they felt. "Every girl that comes in here, I talk to them about having confidence in themself, and not that just confidence is like feeling good, but being able to say no when you're in a situation," she said.
While Marisol was still looking for this year's dress, she was already planning for her Senior Prom, "when I get my new dress I'm going to come here again," she said.
Prom Wishes Inc. does accept donations.
