Yoga has been a cherished practice since the 19th century, known for its ability to alleviate stress and pain throughout the body.

Sue Webb and her student Monica Hamilton stopped by the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages porch to share insights into somatic yoga and its unique approach to movement and relaxation.

Webb explained that somatic movements can vary greatly, with no single method dominating the practice. “The class that I teach are movement techniques that gently contract muscles and then slowly release those muscles to retrain the nervous system to release chronic tension out of the body,” she said.

Somatic yoga is accessible for everyone, including beginners. The movements are subtle yet effective, allowing participants to connect with often-overlooked muscle groups.

Many people are unaware of their habitually contracted muscles, which can lead to chronic pain and misalignments. By directing attention to these specific areas, somatic yoga helps alleviate discomfort and improve posture.

Webb teaches somatic yoga every Monday evening at 6 p.m. at WOMPA, located at 3306 Charles Page Boulevard.

If you're seeking a way to ease stress and connect more deeply with your body, you can register for Webb's classes HERE.
