Tulsa's Gathering Place opens Saturday, and Tulsa Police want to get the word out on where to park.

The Grand Opening will start with a parade at 8:30 followed by the park opening at 10 and parking could be an issue if you don't plan ahead.

For opening day, there are about 1,500 parking spots, but those who live close by like Liz Dunlap, plan to walk.

"I was expecting a lot more foot traffic and cars, but I didn't think about the parking issue. Luckily, we have a driveway that we can park in so we're good," said Dunlap.

Dunlap says the park's popularity has also led to major traffic concerns.

"We moved here about 4 years ago knowing that the park knowing that there would be a lot of traffic on this street," she said

For the parade, you have to enter from the north on Riverside, and you can't use Gathering Place parking until 10 a.m.

The park encourages visitors to use shuttles instead. The shuttles start running at 6 a.m. Saturday and they will run every 15 minutes from OSU Tulsa, the State Fairgrounds, and from the River Spirit Casino.

"We anticipate traffic to be so backed up that people are going to get frustrated, pull into a neighborhood and just start parking, which will frustrate neighbors," said TPD Sgt. Chris Whitt.

Tulsa Police say they will be patrolling the area, to help reduce parking issues and protect neighborhoods nearby.

"We encourage people not to park in the neighborhoods if they can, to be respectful of the people in the homes in and around the gathering place, and to use the satellite stations that they have for parking," said Sgt. Whitt.

After the park opens on-site parking spaces will be reduced, to 530 (23 ADA) permanent parking spaces throughout the Park as well as a larger lot at 31st and Riverside.
