Tulsans Grateful To Escape House Fire

Investigators are trying to determine what started a fire that caused extensive damage to a Tulsa home early Monday.

Firefighters were called to the home near 61st and Richmond at around 2 a.m. They arrived to find flames coming from the roof and garage of the home.

The fire department says a man and woman were able to make it out by the time they arrived at the home.  Firefighters say one dog was also able to get out, but they had to rescue a second dog from the home.

The homeowners are very emotional but also thankful to be OK.

"Things can be replaced," said homeowner Bruce Eaton. "Her and the dogs can't. But like I said, they got the dogs out, they got us out safe - so it's all good."

Firefighters say one resident was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. They say he has since been released.

Twenty-five firefighters worked to put out the fire.

"The difficulty was the roof was a wood frame roof. It is very flammable so we had to make sure that all exposures were protected and then we were able to make an external attack on it and go back in and make sure everything was out. Put everything out from the top down," said Tulsa Fire Captain J. Dyer.

Firefighters say it appears the fire started in the home's garage and spread quickly to the attic and roof. 

 Two vehicles parked in the garage were destroyed in the fire.
