Lindsay Roberts was 32 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"You get that call and it's just shock, disbelief and then fear, crippling fear. I think my first thought and my first words even, my mom was with me, I said, ‘I don't want to die,’" she said.

Lindsay needed to start treatment immediately. Luckily, recent studies found chemotherapy can begin in late-term pregnancies and not harm the baby, so Lindsay went through two rounds and then Eli was born.

"Knowing he was here safely and that he was healthy, didn't spend a minute in the NICU, just immediately got to hold him, and I kind of felt like a sigh of relief like I could breathe because that was the big first hurdle," Lindsay said.

There would be other challenges though. Besides taking care of a newborn, Lindsay would need more chemotherapy and then a double mastectomy.

"I remember we got home from the hospital and the first time we went somewhere I got dressed and, of course, you have all these different pieces that you wear, and got dressed, and put my wig on and I remember looking in the mirror and just crying because I told Aaron I don't even look like myself. I don't even feel like myself," Lindsay said.

"I love Lindsay with all of my heart. You don't think twice about it. It's not what's it gonna be looking like. You just put your head down and fight," said Lindsay’s husband Aaron Roberts.

Together, Lindsay and Aaron will continue to fight by sharing their story with others.

"In the beginning, when you're diagnosed, and you look at I have to do chemo, and I'll have surgery, and radiation, and possibly another surgery, and it's going to be a year-and-a-half, it's easy to get overwhelmed with the long road, so, for me it was one day at a time," Lindsay said.

Eight weeks after giving birth to her son, Lindsay and her husband were at the Komen Race for the Cure - a milestone in their lives – with family and friends that came along to show their love and support their journey.

This year’s race is set for Saturday, September 29th at River Spirit Casino. Participants will walk down Riverside, across the Jenks bridge and back.

Besides the 5K, there will also be a half marathon for serious runners and a one-mile fun run.

Lindsey and Aaron will be there, and you can be a part of it too. You can find more information here.
