Recall On Smoke Detectors That Don't Detect Smoke

Two models of Kidde smoke detectors have been recalled due to a manufacturing defect that inhibits their ability to detect smoke.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Wednesday.  The models under recall are PI2010 and PI9010.  These models were sold at Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon.com, and other stores nationwide.

The affected units are dual-sensor alarms.  The problem supposedly stemmed from an oversight that left a yellow cap covering one of the two smoke sensors.  If you have one of these models, you should be able to look inside the unit for the yellow cap without having to disassemble the device.  If one of the sensors has this cap over it, you can head to Kidde’s website to get a replacement.

Fortunately, no injuries linked to this defect have been reported.  A Kidde representative offered a statement, reading “As customer safety is our first priority, Kidde has worked closely with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other relevant authorities to voluntarily initiate a recall and ensure that affected smoke alarms are replaced with different models as quickly as possible.”
