Kirk Humphreys, the former mayor of Oklahoma City and a current member of the OU Board of Regents, resigned his position on the board, effective the start of the spring semester.
Humphreys announced the decision at a special meeting called by the board on Thursday. The meeting comes after Humphreys made controversial comments about homosexuals on a Sunday morning public affairs program on KFOR-TV.

Humphreys said Tuesday during a public apology that his comments on the show that aired December 10 went "off the rails" and that he regrets hurting people. He also listened to members of the university community, community leaders and students past and present, who detailed how his comments impacted them.
The LGBTQ advocacy group Freedom Oklahoma has called for Humphreys to resign, but Director Troy Stevenson joined Humphreys and didn't renew his call for a resignation and said he opposes Humphreys becoming chairman of the board of regents.
