Classes at Cameron High School have been canceled Wednesday after a fire destroyed parts of the building late Tuesday.
According to KFSM, the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, LeFlore County EMS Director Jeff Fishel said the fire started just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Poteau’s Fire Chief said it took about an hour and a half for crews to contain the fire and were still putting out hot spots early Wednesday.
“We’ll be able to be back in school at least by the end of next week. We can house students, we just need to get the internet service back and for the fire marshal to say the building is safe for students and teachers to enter,” said Cameron Superintendent Jim Caughern.
Investigators said they believe the fire started near the principal’s office at the front of the building.
Firefighters say the administration building and the gym are a complete loss.
The fire department says no one was injured, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
