Two young boys are being hailed as heroes in Muskogee after they tried to keep an elderly couple from going back into their burning home.

The two boys live right next door to the home and were outside playing Monday when they saw the fire.

Mychael and Sean Carter are your typical 10 and 13 year olds. They're best friends and cousins, and on Monday night they became heroes.

"We just see smoke coming out and there was this big black cloud just came straight out the front door," the boys said.

The home of the elderly couple next door was on fire, so the boys rushed over to help.

"It was happening so fast," they said.

They helped the woman outside and into the front yard and then kept the man from trying to go back in.

“I grabbed his arm. I was like ‘you can’t go back in there,’” the boys said.

About that time, Sean's mom ran outside.

"They did the right thing and I'm really proud, they did really good," she said.

Erin: “How'd you know how to do that?”
Mychael: "I ain't got nothing to fear, I got Jesus Christ."
Sean: "We knew it had to be done or they would be hurt"
Erin: “What do you feel about people calling you heroes?”
Boys: “It was very wonderful to help people and not let them die like that."

Assistant fire chief, John Tipton, said the elderly couple went back into the home again to recover some of their things as firefighters got on the scene. He said, at that point, they made the boys stay out front and went in to get the couple.

He said the fire was likely started by a gas stove.

The couple lost everything and is being helped by the Red Cross.
