An elderly couple escaped fire but lost their home of many years early Sunday in Wagoner County. The husband and wife who live in the 19000 block of East 121st Street South woke to the fire around 1:30 a.m.

The wife managed to make it to a neighbor's house, and the neighbor said they called the Coweta Fire Department.

A family member tells News On 6 they were planning to celebrate an early Christmas in the home Sunday morning, December 18, but are instead sifting through the remains to find undamaged property.

They did locate a VHS tape marked "home inventory" that they hope will help in reporting their loss to insurance. The home was a total loss.

The couple will be staying with family and plan to celebrate the holiday at a son's home instead.

Coweta and Broken Arrow Fire Departments both responded to the house fire in the brutally cold temperatures. They remained on scene til about 7 a.m.

No injuries have been reported, but a Coweta firefighter said the icy temperatures caused a lot of problems with freezing gear and water. He told us at least 30 firefighters helped battle the house fire, relieving each other in the single-digit weather.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Amy Slanchik talked to family and neighbors and will have more in tonight's newscasts.
